The TMR Movie preview 2008

Submitted by Jose on Wednesday, 16 January 20082 Comments

Keeping track of all these movies can be hard. There are so many movies out there worth seeing we have a hard time remembering when the time comes for release. So we are going to have to compile our own personal list of movies that we would like to see this year and keep it on the site for easy reference. We are going to sift through the movies of 2008 and list the movies Zeb, Rich, Carl, Terry, Ms.Go, Jose and the rest of the gang at TMR want to see pronto and others we just may want to wait for when they come out on DVD.

So sit back and let’s look at the previews of upcoming movies that just tingle the TMR spine and others that just make us wonder. We will try going over some of the movies everyone at the TMR are talking about and some that just seem to just skirt the buzz envelope. We will provide links to the films official sites when we can. Be sure to check out one of my favorite blogs “Screen Rant” and his sci-fi movie preview of 2008. It’s more focused then mine and you will get his slant on the new movies coming out next year. ( a different opinion is always good) This segment will get updated and changed as we add more movies to the mix. So keep coming back to look at it as we discuss more movies we are looking forward too this year. Please comment and let us know if we missed something. Have a favorite movie your waiting for? Well put it in the comments and tell the world! (or at least the 5 people reading this.)

January 2008

Cloverfield TMR:We already know what this is about. We already know how the hype machine is playing up this movie to be the hottest thing since sliced bread. The web presence, the commercials and the secrets all lead to a phenomenon. Well we will be there for this monster movie. The blog Screen Rant already has a review of it on his site.

Release: January 18th 2008

Cassandra’s Dream” TMR: Two brothers played by Ewan McGregor and Colin Farrell (He is really stepping out on the parts he plays) who run into a bit of financial troubles. They eventually turn to crime to solve their problems. It looks to be a good Woody Allen film just waiting to bust out with strong performances and great directing but something makes me think that this film will have a lackluster box office opening. If I remember, which I probably wont, we will go see this movie.

Release: January 18th 2008

Rambo TMR: One of most violent trailers I have ever seen but does that make it good. My personal opinion is that I think Sylvester Stallone should retire but if he wants to resurrect his character it’s all good. I think we will give it a chance but we are not hoping much as far as something substantial. It will be funny at least and a good damn steamroller event. It will hurt but we shall go see this.

Release:January 25th 2008

Untraceable TMR: A poster with a big face on it…what does that tell me? Nothing much. It’s a movie about a untraceable cyber killer using his web site to get people to kill his victims over the net. Yup. I would probably forget this movie in a heartbeat unless we went to see it on a whim. You ever notice in movies how computers can work miracles? I will tell you now..that whole thing in “Live Free or Die Hard” cannot happen!

Release:January 25th 2008

Meet the Spartans TMR: Zeb really laughed at the trailer and I thought this was probably going to be the dumbest movie to come out in a long time. I don’t think its going to a Uwe Boll production but it will come pretty close. I think the only good parts of this movie are going to be one seen in the movie. The movie is one big parody of movies and I think that whole theme has just been killed. “Epic Movie” anyone? Yuck. I would go see it for free.

Release: January 25th 2008

February 2008

The Eye TMR: I saw this movie a long time ago. Yes I saw the Japanese version of the film and as a Japanese cinema freak I really liked the film. I have always had problems with American knock offs of the original Japanese material because it just really loses something in the translation. I might see it because it looks like its a good remake (with lovely Jessica Alba) but I might jump on a better movie at the theater if I had to choose. Its a go see if I am bored that day movie.

Release: February 1st 2008

Postal” TMR: I don’t know what you have to do to see this movie but you have to see it. I will be honest here and say that I don’t think its going to be good or funny its just going to insult people left and right. I guess that was what the game this movie is based from is all about it. It’s insensitive, sexist, racist, trashy, disgusting, unpatriotic, filthy, nasty and should be banned. Its a Uwe Boll film and I am saying watch it. ARRGHHHHHHH! (raises gun to head and shoots self.)

Release: February 1st 2008

Fools Gold” TMR: Its a love story with an action twist that will bring in both the guys and the girls. I saw the previews and it look slightly interesting but didn’t believe it was going to be that good hence the February release date. Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey seem to meld well together in their parts. I give it a possible “go with your girl to see” rating.

Release: February 8th 2008

Jumper” TMR: It looks like a decent plot revolving around people with the ability to teleport. Some of the guys are hyped about this movie, there seems to some decent action scenes but some were just a bit put off by the trailer for some reason. I will go see this movie just because of the Science fiction theme. I am a sucker like that. I went to see Alien vs. Predator: Requim. God Awful.

Release: February 14th 2008

The Spiderwick Chronicles” TMR: Another Harry Potter? There has been so many movies coming out based on children’s books that I have had a hard time keeping up. Will this be a success? I am not sure after the lackluster performance of “The Golden Compass”. I am sure most fans of the books will probably be disappointed, that is usually the case with these types of films. The trailer seems mildly entertaining but its no Harry Potter. We will go see it, at least I will, I don’t know about the rest of the gang at TMR. Our friend blogger Ms. Go mention some interest in seeing this one.

Release: February 15th 2008

Vantage Point” TMR: The tagline reads: “8 strangers. 8 points of view. 1 truth.” It is an assassination plot told from many different perspectives that takes a look at who is seeing the truth and from what angle. Sounds good and its got a massive cast including Matthew Fox, Forest Whitaker (favorite actor), Sigourney Weaver, Dennis Quaid, Zoe Saldana, William Hurt, Edgar Ramirez and more. Its just brimming with stars. Looks good and we hope to see it.

Release: February 22nd 2008

Witless Protection” TMR: Some of the guys at TMR had me put this one in there. Small town sheriff with a bunch of red necks and pretty women with an added surprise of Larry the Cable guy. We are not seeing this one. Nope. Not doing it. Nope, not at all. Who gives money to these people? Can anyone make a movie? Come on, please!!! I don’t think this will even make money as a bootleg. ARGHHH. This film doesn’t even have an official site.

Release: February 22nd 2008

Be Kind Rewind” TMR: This film looks great and I will make an effort to go see this one. Starring Mos Def and Jack Black, it tells the story of Jerry whose brain becomes magnetized and unintentionally erases every tape in his friends video store. The two friends set out to remake all the lost films the best the can on their limited budget. The trailer looks funny and its got a great quality. Can’t be missed.

Release: February 26th 2008

Semi-Pro” TMR: Tag Lines: “The greatest fro on earth” and “Putting the funk into the dunk”. This is another Will Ferrell production and it shows every bit of it in the the trailer. Its got Woody Harrelson and Andre’ Benjamin in it which is the reason it caught our attention. Will it be funny? I will jump out on a limb and say maybe. Nothing we have not seen before. We might go see this one if we remember, but I doubt we will.

Release: February 26th 2008

March 2008

10,000 B.C.” TMR: The trailer looks amazing and the CGI was outstanding. I have no doubt when this movie comes out on Blue-Ray it will be the movie to show off your HD flat screen. Is it realistic and truthful to the time its suppose to be representing? I think that will be the clincher for me with this release. It’s action oriented and very detailed with great on scene filming locations. We will go see it. A good start to the movie season.

Release: March 7th 2008

Doomsday” TMR: The posters look hot, the making of documentary looks pretty good on the main site and the the overall story looks hot. So what is wrong with this movie? Where is the buzz? It has your typical doomsday plot with a bunch of decent looking people trying to save what is left of the world. Ok, so the “End is Nigh” as the tag line suggests. Trailer discovered…will be posting on the main site as soon as I can. The director Neil Marshall blogs about his experiences on the set for your enjoyment.

Release: March 14th 2008

Inkheart” TMR: It may be me but I have heard this story before. Characters coming to life out of a book? Sound familiar? It’s another young adult book come to life on the big screen. I have not seen a lot buzz on this one but from what I can tell from the trail it had a pretty good premise and actors. I haven’t seen Brendan Fraser in a wile so its good to see him again in a production.

Release: March 24th 2008 (sketchy)

April 2008

Nim’s Island” TMR: I saw the trailer recently and it intrigued me. Jodie Foster playing a comedic role seem to be a far streach for my imagination but it looked like it was working in the few scenes I saw. She plays a reclusive author who goes to a small secluded island to rescue a girl. Looks unbelievable but might see it just because Jodie Foster is playing such a strange role but I don’t give this movie high hopes.

Release: April 4th 2008

Harold & Kumar escape from Guantanamo Bay” TMR: Possibly a good stoner movie. I actually liked the last movie and loved the shots they took at “White Castle”. Man I loved that burger joint back in the day. I remember getting a whole bag of grease stained burgers for like a buck or something. John Cho and and Kal Penn make the movie with their focus on racial identity. Good stuff, we decided we will be seeing it.

Release: April 25th 2008

May 2008

Iron Man” TMR: I think everyone here at TMR has a deep concern that this movie will suck rocks hard. Robert Downey Jr. seems to be able to play it off right as far as I can tell but will this make a good super-hero franchise? Only time and the box office receipts will tell. Some of us at TMR will see this, some of us wont. We are mixed on this one. What do you say?

Release: May 2nd 2008

Speed Racer” TMR: We knew this movie was coming out back in 1999. There was always something floating around my head saying “There should be a Speed Racer movie”. Now that its a reality I think this might possibly be a decent movie. This is another May release that has the team at TMR on the ropes. We are not sure if this will make a big splash. We have the “Matrix” team on this one but there is still a chance it could be a flop…but I doubt it. We will venture out to see this one.

Release: May 9th 2008

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian” TMR: We have been anticipating this movie since the last one. We consider this the true heir to the throne when considering the Christmas epics out there in the field. Some have mixed feelings about the adaptation of the book into the film but there just some space you have to give the screenwriters when they are trying to put such an story on film. We will be going to see this one.

Release: May 16th 2008

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” TMR: The gang at TMR don’t really like the name. It’s too long. We are also worried about Harrrison Fords’ performance. He is getting up in age and the typical action movie may not be for him. We have also seen George Lucas being a little defensive in some recent interviews. So our feelings are mixed on this one. We will go see it though. It’s good to hear that theme song again.

Release: May 22nd 2008

Sex in the City” and “Starship Dave” TMR: None of us in the offices (we wish we had offices) are really interested in seeing any of these movies. That is why I bunched them up right here for your pleasure. I never really liked “Sex in the City” and this “Starship Dave” seems to be something crazy Eddie Murphy cooked up during a bad dream.

Release: May 30th 2008

June 2008

The Incredible Hulk” TMR: The second installment of the Incredible Hulk starts off with Bruce Banner on the run. (Like in the TV show) Edward Norton Stars as our green friend trying to find a cure before he hurts more people. The TMR crew think this version will be better for sure. Some didn’t like Eric Bana but I for one would have liked to see him return to the roll. Marvel in the end decided to restart the franchise with a new cast and creative team.

Release: June 13th 2008

The Happening” TMR: As many at the TMR know I love Apocalyptic movies. M. Night Shyamalan comes out of the closet with this film and a strange name. It makes me worry. I liked “Lady in the Water” was on the fence with “The Village” and thought “Unbreakable” was a silent wonder. Shyamalan has had a questionable relationship with Hollywood and the critics so his latest project may just be doomed right out the door. It’s his first R-rated project which sends chills up my spine. I will give it a chance and see it because I am a fan of Night.

Release: June 13th 2008

Get Smart” TMR: Can Steve Carell pull off the greatest spy ever? It seems just by looking at the trailer Steve Carell will make a great Agent 87. He seem to capture the essence of Maxwell Smart and make it his own. Carell even resembles Don Adams from his voice to every small action he makes. There are few comedies coming out this year that are worth going to see…but I think this will be worth it.

Release: June 20th 2008

Wanted” TMR: Based on the graphic novel by Mark Millar, the film tells the story of a nobody transformed into a killer of amazing level by a group of underworld enforcers. This film is going to be explosive if it sticks to the comic. Starring Angelina Jolie, Morgan Freeman and James McAvoy. “Kill one, save a thousand.” We are going to see it.

Release: June 27th 2008

Wall-E” TMR: A fun animation about a robot left to his own devices for hundreds of years. From writer-director, Andrew Stanton. Probably one of the last pictures being done for Disney by Pixar. Looks to be a great film. A fun summer production that we will go see. The animation looks great and attention to detail looks amazing. We would expect nothing less of Pixar.

Release: June 27th 2008

July 2008

Hancock” TMR: A twist on the super hero movie. Will Smith plays a depressed, manic and often drunk super hero on the edge of society. He saves a PR agent who helps get his image back on a positive spin. The gang at TMR think Hancock is a sure win for the summer box office. Will Smith will pack them in no matter what he plays. We will go see it.

Release: July 2nd 2008

Hellboy 2: The Golden Army” TMR: Guillermo Del Toro brings his unique style to the Hellboy set and he is the right person for the job. If you have ever read the comic, you will not be disappointed in this visual delight. Its a mix of action, humor and down right amazing look into world of Hell Boy.

Release: July 11th 2008

Great stuff !!! I would like to talk to you about a brand new freeware (a labour of love) about movies, named “coollector”. To be honnest (and i am!) I work on it (and very hard). It’s very different than the other software that help manage collections.
I would be very happy if you could give a try!
    Still good stuff!
    Bye.
